Hi there! your blog is really cool and i'm extremely interested in cancer immunology! I'm currently in high school looking for a lab to work in and perhaps a professor as a mentor because i want to enter the INTEL contest next year.. any suggestions?

Hi,  Its great to hear that high school students are actually interested in this area.  I didn’t my first immunology course till the end of college because its a high level field that incorporates so many different areas of science (cell biology, biochemistry, metabolism, ect).

We’ve had a couple of high school student work in our lab during the summer and they always seem to be local so if you have a nearby college that has the research available I would definitely email those P.I. and maybe attach your C.V. and a letter of recommendation from one of your science teachers.

I didn’t do biomedical research till after my sophomore year of college and there are tons of internships like SURPs (summer undergraduate research program) and SERFs (summer undergraduate research fellowship) available.  They probably have similar programs available for high school students (just do Google search).

What got you interested in the field?  For me, at the end of high school I attended a National Youth Leadership forum for medicine and was interested in cardiology (after watching 8 hours of open heart surgery…my eyes were bulging out of my head).  Research didn’t come along until a few years later.  Kudos for getting a jump on it.  It’ll pay off for sure.

Too Much TV Lowers Sperm Count By 44 Percent, Harvard Study Says

Perhaps if we didn’t have 300,000,000 sperm released in a single ejaculation leading to thousands reaching the egg this would be of concern.  However this article would suggest that if you’re having a hard time getting pregnant perhaps you should exercise a little more.  Makes sense considering the release of a various slue of hormones during exertion.image

hi Chris,I'm Justus from Nigeria. How is life at Louisville? I'm currently undergoing my masters programme in Nigeria in the field of Biochemistry. I am interested in cancer research and will like to be a part of the cancer research team, but i dontknow how easy it is to get a host over there. Please let me know if i can get a willing host in Louisville.I will be expecting your response as soon as possible. thanks so much.

Hey Justus,  Everything is going really well here.  Busy working in lab.  How are things in Nigeria?  In terms of a host I’m sure the UofL International Center would be able to hook you up.  Here is their website http://louisville.edu/internationalcenter

From the top floor of a block of flats I noticed a caravan parked in a dirty, disused yard across the road. Something drew me to it. Even though the thing was by no means alone; with terraces, warehouses and gardens surrounding it, it seemed completely isolated and detatched from these happenings. Its overgrown yard seemed to be its own very seperate space. As the heavy rain poured down, somehow making the silence louder, the caravan sat passively, soothed by the white noise, thinking.

Exploring the personification of abandoned obects and buildings.

This is something I frequently do inside my head when witnessing abandoned or derelict objects, but I have now decided to expand the language and description further than just, for example, calling the object lonely or saying it is waiting. The intent is to try to imbue a sense of life into things that could easily be dismissed as forgotten or meaningless.

What is difficult to express is how to me the life of these things seems to be different, almost awkward when compared to human life. Ruins and abandoned objects, as expressed in the book Irresistible Decay by Roth, Lyons and Merewether, are in a constant state of flux between past, present and future and this ultimately makes them outsiders. The abandoned and ruined can be seen more easily as pitiable living beings when it is realised that “they can never belong fully to the present without losing their status as ruins.”

Great thought put into this piece.  Thanks for sharing!

Keep the Kids Off the Trampoline, Pediatricians Warn

Parents should be discouraged from letting kids bounce on trampolines at home, according to an updated policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Using a trampoline is inherently dangerous, the authors of the report said, and safety features like enclosed netting and padding are insufficient to reduce the risk of injury. Many children […]

Another instance where science and healthcare workers waste tax payers money to prove that life is dangerous and that parents should over-protect their children from experiencing life and making mistakes.
